Overcoming Diabetes Learning from Dolphins

February 24th, 2010

dolphinsCalifornia, researchers trying to learn how to overcome the dolphins diabetes. By learning from this friendly mammals, a new diabetes drug also can be developed.

Researchers found that dolphins have a type of diabetes the same as adult humans. But the unique, the dolphins have their own way to disable or enable the disease itself.

This discovery could open a new path for researchers to cure diabetes. Diabetes by the dolphins actually used as a way to overcome the lack of food.

Although the discovery is interesting, but the researchers did not intend to use the dolphins as research material. Researchers will only take blood and DNA samples of dolphins to be analyzed and developed.

Diabetes occurs when the pancreas can not produce the hormone insulin in sufficient quantities to regulate blood sugar levels.

In humans, diabetes can lead to heart disease but in fact dolphins used to overcome hunger.

While there is no food or fast, the dolphins make himself had insulin resistance which makes glucose is not released from the blood and the brain eventually still get the supply of energy. But when food is available, they turned off the insulin resistant state and eventually the blood sugar can be controlled again.

As reported by Dailymail, Stephanie Venn Dr. Watson of the National Marine Mammal Association, San Diego, California, believes that diabetes had evolved from earlier beings. By studying the techniques used by dolphins, diabetes can be overcome with a new way.
